Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto # 1 (original version): Mikhail Pletnev, piano
Переглядів 72111 місяців тому
Mikhail Pletnev, Klavier Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini Leitung: Omer Meir Wellber A refreshing performance of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no 1 in bb. This is the original version, I think the first of 3. The thematic structure is the same, but is filled with subtle differences from beginning to end . It's worth a listen.

This performance, which I have on CD, is quite something but I was a long way from being truly amazed which would have been the case when Lawrence did her equestrian act which I can only imagine. Besides having an instrument as warm & satisfying as Flagstad, IMO she created a visual sensation actually seeming to ride into the flames as the orchestra finished GÖTTERDÄMERUNG. A MET moment for the ages.

Her speaking voice, cadence and vocabulary is beautiful to listen to…especially when compared to how badly people speak today.

Unfortunately, recording (either live or in the studio) never adequately captured just how big Mr. Lakes' voice was.

The music heard in rehearsal is that of Alfredo Catalani -- one of the dances from his opera “La Wally”, a rehearsal dating probably from 1952 or ‘53, toward the end of the Maestro’s active life. Not long ago, a 78rpm acetate of this brief sequence was for sale. I hate myself for not snapping it up! Mrs. Horowitz is right: Toscanini preferred the piano to the ‘cello. Students at the conservatory in his hometown of Parma were assigned instruments based on the needs of the local opera orchestra. Toscanini did study piano at the conservatory, but he was mostly self-taught on that instrument. In the incident in Bologna she describes, the car that sped him away from the Fascist thugs was driven by Elsa Respighi, wife of the composer (and a composer in her own right -- she lived to be over a hundred). Thanks so much for posting this!

I was present at the first performance in Los Angeles. The renowned late concert violinist, Vera Barstow, stated that she could not believe that such textures could be achieved with a string trio.

Superb - and, so far, the only dramatic soprano, apart from Eva Turner, I've heard who doesn't split up the high phrases 'Mainessun m'avra, Ah rinasce in me' and 'l'orgoglio ditanta purita' by taking a breath in the middle of them, which is so satisfying musically!

Someone like Christine is much needed today. She tells the story of gender so clearly and firmly with such self-respect. She is above the drama, speaks with the intellect of an expert but in plain words.

Voce torrenziale, lunga in alto e sotto, gusto da vendere. A fine carriera tendeva ad aprire le note di passaggio. Avesse fatto l'attore, avrebbe avuto certamente lo stesso successo.

I listen to this every Christmas. I have the Virgil Fox CD. That high note is spine chilling but then she descends from it perfectly. It's like watching a gymnast do a perfect landing after a perfect performance. This is actually so intense for me, I only listen once privately because it's so emotional for me. I'll play it for other people who haven't heard it before. The combination of her voice and a massive pipe organ is just unbelievable. I want to say awesome but the word is overused today and has no meaning. This performance leaves me choked up and speechless. My God when she hits and holds the high note and the organ swells to catch up with her. Flat fucking unbelievable.

This is a true vocal miracle. Looking at the picture and the self-accompaniment it is likely she is in her mid-fifties here and retired for more than a decade yet her voice sound finer than every other recording of this aria [I have just listened to all of the ones available on UA-cam] and the combination of beauty, technique, and emotive involvement cannot be matched.

At 25:15 she might be sheding light on the transphobia being the actual mental health issue that has been scourging the earth, especially during these times. There were some studies done on transphobia recently and we have discovered a strong connection to narcissistic atagonism and misogyny, which makes sense as narcissism has a lot to do with invalidation and playing a victim at the same time, lack of self awarenss and self projection, they are generally attracted to those who have developed a strong connection to their true self, which they need to tear down as a reflection of their own misalignment with themselves, since they live from their false self, this seems to be their toxic relationship to trans people in general. Accepting differences in others and letting go is not something they are simply capable of.

One of the few performances and recordings I have ever heard -whether by acclaimed boy trebles or professional adult sopranos- where the runs in the 'Allelujia' are clearly articulated, yet without being staccato/aspirated. Purely great diapragh technique. No 'alternate' High C to conlude -yet the 'A's' are clear and strong, so no doubt not because of any inability or voice.

After her big success in the role at the Florence Festival and in her peak voice it should have been an honour for the Met to create a production of La Fanciulla for Steber, their homegrown star. Unfortunately it would seem that Rudolf Bing was never keen on her singing Puccini at the house. How can we be anything less than overjoyed for her that she got this one extra night of glory in the house to which she had dedicated so much of her career. No - one could take that away from her , nor could they take away the love of her public.

I always appreciated the very complex timbre of Ms. Amara. Her voice had a silvery blue color which she could sheath in a dark morbid cast for the poiniently sad sections of Butterfly. In fact, for me, her overall timbre and phrasing in Butterfly made her one of two interpretors of the character I believe were the most effective. Later in her career, she undertook the title role in Turandot which was quite astonishing. By that time, her voice gained significant weight without laboring on highlying passages, BUT, the silverblue sheen had NOT left her vocal profile. Her natural vocal endowment and technique allowed us to experience wonderful vocal impersonations for decades. BRAVA and thankyou!!!
